  • National Mental Health Association

    The NMHA Resource Center is a nationally recognized resource for information on mental illnesses and treatments, and referrals for local treatment services. The Center has a toll-free number at 1-800-969-NMHA (800-969-6642), which is staffed Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm EST. NMHA has over 340 affiliates across the country, which can be contacted directly for referrals to local services.

  • American Psychiatric Association

    The APA offers information to the public on a variety of mental health issues. This site also features a list of district associations which provide referrals to local resources.

  • Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health
    24-hour referral hotline at 1-800-854-7771

  • If you need immediate help, call the National Hopeline Network
    1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433) to reach a certified crisis center
    24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This Report of the Surgeon General on Mental Health is the product of an invigorating collaboration between two Federal agencies. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), which provides national leadership and funding to the states and many professional and citizen organizations that are striving to improve the availability, accessibility, and quality of mental health services, was assigned lead responsibility for coordinating the development of the report.
